"11832","documents","CFA Member Folios","Some of you had asked about these leather folios that are used to
organize the Commission?s documents at the table when we meet in
person. These folders are not particularly historic, but are maybe
about 20-25 years old (and I think replaced older ones). Note that
they have to be updated periodically, and this last happened in 2021?
so Lisa, Bruce, and Bill haven?t been added yet. Sadly, the
workmanship on the last additions of stamped names wasn?t nearly to
the quality of the existing ones!

Covington remembers their family used to have dinner together every Sunday night when she was growing up. They often congregated at one of her aunt's houses in the Ransom Place neighborhood.

As Covington, who's now nearly 90, sat around the dinner table during Lamothe's photoshoot, she thought of those weekly gatherings she attended as a kid. But she also wondered what her ancestors would say if they knew their old neighborhood had become a college campus.

Significance may not be placed on how long the ancestor was in a place. Harvey Flenough was only in Utah for six months.
The earliest timepoint is 1773, so many of the changes in location were of enslaved persons. Only two names are recorded for the ninth generation; imagine the names missing since 1619.

The Army held four more Maneuver phases in 1943, beginning
April 26, July 5, September 13, and November 22. The last phase of the Tennessee Maneuvers began on January 31, 1944, and future exercises were suspended because of the great need for troops in Europe. Middle Tennessee was not without an Army presence between Maneuver phases. Besides the regular training being conducted in the area, Signal Corp and Engineer troops came in before and stayed after the combat troops. The Signal Corps strung miles of wire for field communications and outfitted the message center that connected the Maneuver Director Headquarters in Lebanon with the Second Army Headquarters in Memphis and with officials in Washington, D.C. The Signal Corps also maintained messenger pigeons to carry messages between headquarters and front line troops. The photographic section of the Signal Corps maintained a visual record of the Tennessee Maneuvers. The engineers had the task of repairing some of the damage to area farms, roads, bridges, and anything else that the mock fighting had damaged. Landowners could also file claims for compensation for damage incurred. Army inspectors settled claims as quickly as possible (Sloan 1995). Some of the troops left behind for damage repair were black soldiers. A resident of Bellwood in Wilson County remembers black troops camping near his farm after a Maneuver phase. They were in the area to repair fences.

Yes, says Justin Garrett Moore, another volunteer organizer behind Bank Black USA and executive director of the New York City Public Design Commission. (He’s also a Next City Vanguard.) Moore grew up in Indianapolis, in the historically black neighborhood of Mapleton-Fall Creek. His parents still live in the area, but the neighborhood is changing. The elementary school he attended, nearly all black when he was a student, was converted into a charter school and is now nearly all white students, he says. His middle school was also converted into a high school, serving a different population, over the objections of residents worried it would exclusively cater to wealthier and whiter populations, as reported in Chalkbeat.","2017-01-17 20:56:16"

"3031","documents","The Moore Brothers - Thorn Tree Court.doc","The Moore Brother?s ? Thorn Tree Court:
We grew up a block away from the fairgrounds in Indianapolis, Indiana on Guilford Avenue. Bordered by 38th Street and College Avenue, our neighborhood was one of a kind. My oldest brother John Jr., my youngest brother Justin, and I (Jason), had a lot of fun growing up in the white house with the columns. Of all the gifts our parents gave us as kids, one of the best investments was a basketball court! It made our home the center of the neighborhood, provided countless hours of entertainment, and turned us into a family that did things together.
Since we owned the only basketball court in the neighborhood, people would come from several blocks away to visit our ?Thorn Tree Court?. Yes, our basketball court was attached to the largest thorn tree ever planted! It provided plenty of shade in the sun, and you could even play in the rain without getting wet. However, that tree probably claimed five basketballs per year, with its phantom thorns! We used to play pick-up games year-round. For several summers, our back yard also hosted several soccer and football games too. Our yard was the neighborhood park! Some kids even created a game called ?Curb Ball? (think basketball without a court on the street) while waiting for us to come out to play! So we had a chance to get to know everyone. It was to us what barbershops are supposed to be ? a community. If somebody was looking for someone, they?d stop by our court. If Michael Jordan did a new dunk, you came to our court to imitate him. People in our neighborhood even knew our dog ?Fluffy?! As the ?mayor? of our neighborhood, everyone knew Johnny. For years, everyone used to call me Lil? John! I?d always tell them my name real name, but, my nickname remains ?Lil? John? in the old neighborhood!
When we weren?t playing a game of ?21? or ?mini? elimination tournaments, we were always doing something as a family. I think we entertained the neighbors with cutting down trees, using propane touches to burn the paint off our house, and even mixing our own concrete to make a patio! We even made money for school clothes by parking cars during the summer fair. All of us (at some point) delivered the Indiana Star and News to our neighbors. While we worked hard, we played harder. Most summer nights, the whole family would sit on the porch (swing) and watch cars and people go by. Here?s a quick list of the things we used to do:
? Go to church
? Black Expo,
? Visit family and friends
? Go to the movies (drive-ins too!),
? The Children?s Museum
? Go to the ?beach? (Eagle Creek ? lol!)
? Go to the pool (Mom would load up the station wagon with us, kids from the neighborhood, everyone)
? Kids used to beg us to tag along on one of our famous ?Dairy Queen Runs?, and more.
? Our 4th of July firework displays were always a neighborhood favorite.
If I were to list all of the fun things were did growing up, it would fill a book!
We were quite fortunate growing up when and where we did. I never took our blessings for granted, as friends pointed out how lucky we were to have a Mom and Dad who did things with us, had jobs, built tree houses, played basketball with us, and more! Of all my experiences in life, my parents investment in a Basketball Court for Me, Johnny and Justin, was one of the best. Thanks Mom and Dad!","2009-07-26 17:28:13"
