USCT Questions

For over forty years two wonderful pictures by Burl Washington have hung in our dining room. The question that came to mind was are the uniforms "historically correct"?

At a few recent genealogy group meetings, three unrelated topics were mentioned; dating photos by the clothes worn, USCT records, and ancestors fighting in every American war. While I've yet to discover an ancestor affiliated with the USCT (U. S. Colored Troops) or any ancestor who fought in any war (my wife's Dad and Granddad fought in WWII and WWI); I've had pictures of a "Buffalo Soldiers" hanging on my dining room walls for over forty years. The question that came to mind was are the uniforms "historically correct"?

I have to admit that I didn't even know the name of the artist, as the pictures were purchased by my wife many years ago. Much to my surprise, when I Googled "Lone Buffalo Soldier" the image of our picture of the Lone Buffalo Soldier came up! The picture titled "Breaktime" also comes up in a Google search.

It turns out that the artist of our pictures, Burl Washington has a Buffalo Soldier Collection He also has items displayed in the Buffalo Soldier museum. The museum has a Buffalo Soldier Database. I looked in vain for surnames, enlistment places, and birth places looking for a USCT family affiliation.

I've mentioned "Buffalo Soldier" but not defined who they were here's a good explanation.
